Gibson Serial Number Lookup

Enter your Gibson serial number to instantly decode the year, factory, and production details.

Gibson Serial Number Formats

YDDDYPPP (8 digits)(1977-2013)

The standard modern Gibson format. Digits 1 and 5 form the year, digits 2-4 are the day of year, and digits 6-8 indicate the plant and production ranking.

CS + digits(1983-present)

Gibson Custom Shop instruments use a CS prefix followed by a sequential number.

YY + sequential(2014-present)

Newer Gibsons use a 2-digit year prefix followed by a sequential production number.

5-6 digit number(1953-1977)

Older Gibsons used sequential numbers with ranges that overlap between years. Cross-reference with other features for accuracy.

H + digits(1993-present)

Historic Collection and VOS (Vintage Original Spec) reissues.

Where to Find Your Gibson Serial Number

  • â–¶Back of the headstock (most common for modern Gibsons)
  • â–¶On the orange label inside acoustic guitars (visible through sound hole)
  • â–¶Impressed into the back of the headstock on older models
  • â–¶On the neck block inside semi-hollow and hollow body guitars

Tips

  • â–¶Gibson serial numbers can be ambiguous for guitars made before 1977 — use the Factory Order Number (FON) stamped inside the body for more accuracy.
  • â–¶Custom Shop Gibsons always start with "CS" followed by digits.
  • â–¶If your 8-digit serial produces a day-of-year greater than 365, it may not be a genuine Gibson serial.

Spotting Counterfeit Gibson Guitars

Gibson is one of the most counterfeited guitar brands in the world. Fake Gibsons range from obvious knockoffs to sophisticated replicas that can fool casual buyers. Here are the key things to check before buying a Gibson.

Headstock & Logoâ–¼
  • â–¶The Gibson headstock has a specific break angle of approximately 17 degrees — fakes often have a shallower or steeper angle.
  • â–¶The "open book" headstock shape should have clean, symmetrical curves. Fakes often have slightly off proportions, especially in the "ears."
  • â–¶The Gibson logo should be a pearl or mother-of-pearl inlay, not a decal or painted-on text (except on some budget models).
  • â–¶Check the "i" in Gibson — on authentic guitars, the dot of the "i" should connect to the "b" in a characteristic way.
Serial Number Red Flagsâ–¼
  • â–¶Serials beginning with "0171" are an extremely common fake serial prefix — this is the most well-known counterfeit marker.
  • â–¶The serial number should be cleanly impressed or ink-stamped into the headstock. Sloppy, too-deep, or inconsistently spaced digits suggest a fake.
  • â–¶Decode the serial number: if it produces an impossible date (day-of-year over 365, or a future year), the guitar is counterfeit.
  • â–¶Authentic Gibson serial numbers should match the guitar's apparent age and features.
Hardware & Electronicsâ–¼
  • â–¶Gibson toggle switches use a cream-colored plastic tip and a circular splined nut — fakes commonly use a large hexagonal nut.
  • â–¶Gibson uses braided, cloth-covered internal wiring. Fakes typically have cheap plastic-insulated wires.
  • â–¶Tuning machines should be Grover Rotomatics, Kluson-style, or Gibson Deluxe. Check for the brand stamp on the back of each tuner.
  • â–¶Pickup covers on humbuckers should be nickel-plated and have clean, uniform holes. Cheap chrome-plated covers with rough edges indicate a fake.
Neck & Fretboardâ–¼
  • â–¶Authentic Gibsons have fret nibs — small extensions of the binding that cap the fret ends. Most fakes lack these entirely.
  • â–¶The truss rod cover should be 2-ply (black/white) on Les Pauls and have either "Les Paul Model," "Standard," "Custom," or be blank. "Gibson" on the truss rod cover indicates an Epiphone, not a Gibson.
  • â–¶The neck binding should be clean, smooth, and consistent. Sloppy binding with visible glue or gaps is a red flag.
Body & Constructionâ–¼
  • â–¶Genuine Gibson Les Pauls are heavy — typically 8-10 lbs. An unusually light Les Paul (under 7 lbs) without chambering may be fake.
  • â–¶The body should be mahogany with a maple cap (Les Paul). Check the control cavity — the wood should look and smell like genuine mahogany.
  • â–¶The headstock is glued to the neck at an angle, creating a visible scarf joint. On fakes, this joint is often poorly executed or positioned differently.
  • â–¶Three-piece headstock construction (visible seam lines on the back) was used in certain eras — if the grain pattern doesn't match the era claim, be suspicious.
Case & Documentationâ–¼
  • â–¶Gibson cases have a specific pink/purple plush interior lining. Brown, grey, or cheap felt lining is wrong.
  • â–¶Modern Gibsons come with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). Check that the serial on the COA matches the guitar.
  • â–¶The "Gibson" embossed on the case should be clean and centered. Fake cases often have off-center or poorly stamped logos.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I date a Gibson guitar by serial number?â–¼

For Gibsons made from 1977-2013, the serial number follows the YDDDYPPP format. Take the 1st and 5th digits to form the 2-digit year (e.g., serial 82765501: digits 1 and 5 are "8" and "5" = 1985). Digits 2-4 give the day of the year (276 = October 3rd). For 2014 and later, the first 2 digits are the year.

Where was my Gibson guitar made?â–¼

Gibson has manufactured guitars in several locations: Kalamazoo, MI (1902-1984), Nashville, TN (1974-present), Bozeman, MT (acoustics, 1989-present), Memphis, TN (semi-hollows, 2000-2019), and the Custom Shop also operates in Nashville. Digits 6-8 of the 8-digit serial can indicate which factory — 001-499 Nashville, 500-999 Kalamazoo (vintage), 900+ Custom Shop.

Is my Gibson guitar real or fake?â–¼

Check several things: the serial number should follow a known Gibson format, the headstock shape should match the era, the truss rod cover should say "Gibson" (or be blank on older models), the binding and inlays should be high quality, and the weight and wood quality should feel substantial. A decoded serial number that produces an impossible date is a red flag.

What year is my Les Paul?â–¼

Enter your Les Paul's serial number above. If it's an 8-digit number (1977-2013), the 1st and 5th digits form the year. For example, "93456789" would decode to 1999 (digits "9" and "9"). The tool will also tell you which factory made it.

What Gibson models can this tool decode?â–¼

This tool works with all Gibson models including Les Paul, SG, ES-335, ES-339, Flying V, Explorer, Firebird, J-45, Hummingbird, J-200, L-00, and all Custom Shop instruments. The serial number format is the same regardless of model.

More About Gibson

Gibson Guitar Corporation was founded in 1902 by Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where it remained headquartered for over 70 years. Orville Gibson had spent the 1890s developing archtop mandolins and guitars with carved, violin-style tops — a construction technique he patented in 1898. The company he founded would go on to define the American electric guitar.

The most transformative period in Gibson's history came under the leadership of Ted McCarty, who served as president from 1948 to 1966. McCarty oversaw the development of the Les Paul (1952), the Flying V and Explorer (1958), the ES-335 (1958), the SG (1961), and the introduction of the humbucker pickup in 1957. These designs remain among the most played and copied guitars in the world today.

Chicago Musical Instruments acquired Gibson in 1944, and the company changed hands several more times through the following decades. Norlin Musical Instruments owned Gibson from 1969 to 1986 — a period widely regarded as a low point for build quality. A management buyout in 1986 initiated a sustained quality recovery. Gibson moved its primary electric guitar production from Kalamazoo to Nashville, Tennessee in 1974, while acoustic production relocated to Bozeman, Montana in 1989.

Gibson filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2018 following debt accumulated under aggressive brand diversification strategies. The company emerged from bankruptcy the same year under new ownership with a refocused strategy centred on guitars. Modern Gibsons from 2019 onward are broadly considered the best the company has built since the early 1990s.
